The Nightly featured commentary from Chris Watling, Longview Economics' Chief Market Strategist, in its article, "European riots fuel fears of fresh European debt as French bond yields rise again, Goldman Sachs warns", published on 19th October 2026.
The article examines growing concerns over European financial stability, as political unrest in France, rising borrowing costs and widening fiscal deficits revive fears of a renewed sovereign debt crisis. French government bond yields have climbed amid mounting uncertainty ahead of the country's 2027 presidential election.
Commenting on France's fiscal position and the challenges facing policymakers, Chris noted:
"Clearly France has got structural problems and is somewhat ungovernable, they're trying to get a budget through again, but the deficits and debts are very high."
Chris also highlighted the potential role of the European Central Bank (ECB) in containing rissing borrowing costs, while acknowledging the political sensitivities surrounding any intervention:
"On the other hand you have the ECB with a mechanism to control these spreads (yields), but it won't want to be seen to meddle ahead of a (French election) unless there's more chaos across Europe."
The discussion highlights how longstanding fiscal challenges, political uncertainty and pressure on sovereign bond markets are creating a difficult backdrop for European policymakers. While the ECB has mechanisms available to address widening bond spreads, the timing and circumstances of any intervention remain uncertain.
